Holiday Treats for Healthy Teeth

Christmas is time to celebrate and to enjoy seasonal foods. Making healthy food choices will help to preserve your pearly whites.

Keep Hydrated with Water

Keep hydrated with plain water which helps wash away food debris and maintains a healthy amount of saliva. Saliva is your body’s protection against tooth decay because it helps to counteract erosive acids and it contains essential enzymes, proteins and minerals that protect your teeth.

Stock up on Crunchy Fruits and Veggies

Fruits and veggies will help keep your teeth in shape. Carrots, celery, apples, raw broccoli, and cucumber all have high-water contents. Those that are especially fibrous like carrots and celery are great for teeth because they stimulate saliva and the fibres have a slight scrubbing action on teeth.

Choose Cheese and Other Dairy Products

Bypass the sugary sweet treats and head for the cheese board for a boost of calcium. Cheese, yoghurts and plain milk are all great for your teeth but avoid flavoured yoghurts that can be high in sugars.

Tuck into Turkey

Turkey, chicken and other lean meats contain phosphorus, protecting tooth enamel, and especially when combined with calcium. If you prefer fish, salmon is an excellent source of vitamins D, enabling your body to absorb tooth-protecting calcium.
